Warm greetings from the Medical Disorders in Pregnancy Committee,KFOG. The Committee on Medical Disorders in Pregnancy was formed by the KFOG with a vision to ensure the highest standard of care in the Medical aspect of the birthing woman.
As obstetric hemorrhage has lost it’s crown as the major killer of mothers and medical disorders like severe pre eclampsia and peripartum cardiomyopathy have emerged as the major contributors to the morbidity and mortality of the gravidas,it is the responsibility of this committee to ensure a proper state of the art care to the mother in her medical aspect.
The Medical Disorders in Pregnancy Committee has taken many steps to ensure awareness regarding proper prevention, early detection and management of Medical Disorders amongst the Obstetricians of Kerala.
Webinars on Medical Disorders in Pregnancy were conducted every four months on various topics like maternal sepsis,liver disorders,acute kidney injury,auto immune diseases, neurological disorders in pregnancy. The webinars were conducted zone wise,and active participation of experts from all zones of KFOG were ensured.This educational tool was well appreciated by the Obstetricians all over Kerala.
A workshop on Medical Disorders in Pregnancy was conducted as part of the GESTICON 2025 held at Kozhikode.,on the first day .Relevant topics in maternal Medical diseases were discussed by stalwarts in the field,with a jam packed audience.
During the creation of the handbook REALM by KFOG for respectful and expert maternal care,Dr Thanku Thomas Koshy, Chairperson, Medical Disorders Committee authored the pages on Obstetric Medical Disorders.
A campaign on the awareness of heart disease in pregnancy by the committee ,on behalf of KFOG was launched on the day of hearts ,February 14th,the Valentine’s day. The theme of the campaign was ,”It all begins with the heart,let it not end with the heart.” There was an overwhelming response to the campaign from all the societies.CMEs,seminars and awareness classes were held in all societies as part of it.
The committee is planning to conduct similar campaigns on neurological disorders and liver disorders in pregnancy, and a special awareness program on the prevention and management of Maternal sepsis.
